Creating Projects

What is a Project?

Projects are how we organize your financial documents. Think of a Project as a self-contained bucket where you analyze financial documents from a single source. In any divorce action, there are two parties disclosing information, and each project should only contain files concerning a single party.

Creating a Project

Projects can be created from the account home screen after logging in. You can access the Projects overview by clicking "Projects" in the left sidebar below the CounselPro logo, or by navigating to https://app.counselpro.ai/

Click the "Create new project" button near the top of the page, and give it a descriptive name. We recommend using the last name of the party in the action you are about to analyze.

Uploading financial documents to a Project

How to upload documents

Notice: CounselPro can only process files in PDF format. The PDF can be a scan from a printed document, or it can be a digital PDF supplied directly from a banking institution. The quality of the PDF must be legible in order for the system to correctly read the characters on the page.

Navigate to any unprocessed Project. If you have not previously added any documents, click the button labeled "Upload PDF statements".

If your project already has had financial statements uploaded to it and has not yet been processed, you will see a button labeled "Upload additional statements", where you can continue to upload documents.

You will see the following window appear:

CounselPro only supports Bank statements and Credit Card statements. If you upload and process retirement accounts, or other investment accounts, it will not accurately extract data.

Click Upload PDF statements to complete this step.

Processing a Project

How to process a Project

Once you have uploaded all the Bank and Credit Card statements you want to analyze, and you check the number of statement pages you want to process is correct, you can click the button labeled "Process project".

Notice: once you process a project, you will not be able to add new statements to the project, so make sure you're ready before clicking the Process project button.

Document processing details

Extracting

The first step uses advanced Optical Character Recognition to pull the following details from each financial PDF:

  • Transaction date

  • Transaction description

  • Transaction amount

Categorizing

The next step takes your extracted information, and enriches it using a financial service that analyzes the transaction description. It returns:

  • An overall category, such as "General merchandise", or "Transportation"

  • A detailed category, such as "Electronics", or "Gas"

Location data

Transactions are identified as possibly being in three different buckets:

  • In store

  • Online

  • Other
